The Day Mrs. Claus Came to Town

Every year Ken Matthews Garden Center brings the holiday season to life. As our expert gardeners create outdoor delights, our garden elves magically transform the gift shop into a winter wonderland.  There is excitement aplenty as we celebrated our Christmas Open House with holiday specials, warm apple cider and cookies for our guest and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Our Santa was a charming gentleman with rosy cheeks and a bellowing laugh and Mrs. Clause was a vivacious, pleasantly plump older woman played by me! Dressed in our Christmas finery, Santa and I delighted our visitors, young and old, as we took hay rides around the garden center and told stories about the North Pole.
As the afternoon was coming to a close, Santa and I walked to the edge of Rt. 17 to wave to the people that drove by. Santa and I were thrilled and overwhelmed by the number of passerby’s that tooted their horns and shouted out greetings to us.As Santa and I were turning to leave, we noticed a car slowing down.  A young woman popped her head out of the window and shouted ecstatically, “Hello Mrs. Claus, welcome to Yorktown!”  I could not contain my delight as I watched the vehicle drive out of sight for it was at that moment I knew I was Mrs. Claus and I was thrilled I had indeed come to town.

I must admit, when I was asked to play Mrs. Claus, I immediately said “No! Not me!  I could never impersonate Mrs. Claus!”  But as I dressed myself in her attire, I felt the “Christmas Magic” come over me.  Being Mrs. Claus for a day brought a different kind of excitement to my heart…one that will stay with me for many Christmases to come!

Prolong Your Christmas Tree

Did you know…a Christmas tree can consume one gallon of water each day and if your tree runs out, it will sap over and then die more quickly?

By keeping your tree watered with Prolong you will find the tree will hold its needles longer in the dry heat of your winter home.  Prolong causes cut trees to absorb more water than it would otherwise, thus extending the life of the tree. Its special formula is an easy, effective way to keep your Christmas tree fresher, greener, and safer.

Prolong Testimonial from Anita Bryant: “After 4 months our Christmas tree (pictured above) is still doing well. It was so fresh and green we didn’t want to take it to the dump, so we put it on our deck.  We used the Prolong the first week. We moved it outside around January 4th. Once outside we did not do anything. The needles are starting to turn since it is getting warmer. We couldn’t believe how long it lasted.”

Holiday Magic with a new… or renewed custom designed wreath!

Whether fresh or permanent, we will custom design a wreath to compliment the decor of your home… or your personality!
We can use as many as 6 different fresh evergreens (boxwood, magnolia, pine, holly, cypress and nandina), as well as seed pods and pine cones.  Not only are they aromatic, but they are also breathtakingly beautiful.

In addition, we have an abundant selection of artificial picks that imitate the fresh evergreens and berries.  Or if you want something with flair, an ensemble that’s fun and full of holiday spirit can be arranged!  So… choose a wreath, fresh or permanent, and let our designers work their holiday magic!

Tips for the Garden

  • Holiday poinsettias do best with indirect sun for at least half the day and night temperatures in the 50’s or 60’s. Keep plants away from drafts, heat registers and radiators. Let the soil dry only slightly between watering. Be sure to punch holes in decorative foil wraps to allow drainage or remove and place in your favorite container!
  • If you have friends or family members that are gardeners, think of gardening gifts for holiday presents.  Books, gloves, hand tools, weather instruments, and decorative pots are some ideas to consider.
